Try Reading When Dulled

Try Reading When Dulled

Try reading when dulled

When, on that edge of tiredness,

The words are a blur

And whirr

Round and round on the retina.

They are there

The words

And stare and stare as you might

First sight doesn’t connect

With the dismal, dim, dull depths

Of grey matter

What did I just read?

Oh, reading, but I was

Watching daydreams drift by

Was I?

Drifting in a daze

The words a haze

Synapse delays

Close the eyes.

  1. A very nice poem, Simon! That has happened to me on so many occasions. When I’ve read a paragraph for the fifth time and it’s still not sinking in, time to put the book down and go to bed. 😉

  2. Hi Simon – I can’t concentrate when I’m tired, weary or just plain worried … it’s the way it is – love the way you’ve expressed the idea – and I won’t try reading if you don’t mind!! Cheers and I hope to be here for next week’s WAWTB – Hilary
