Remembered Scent
Car ignition
The motor and
a smell
long, long
forgotten
returned.
A long forgotten
scent
of him,
one loved deeply.
The same smell.
And we
remember.
The nose knows
and remembers.

Scents are powerful memory jogs.
Yes they are.
Scents may be even more powerful than we realize. When my first boyfriend from high school found me again after 39 years, I couldn’t get enough of the scent of his skin. My nose would linger on his neck or wrist and I would inhale deeply. It was intoxicating. Yet on a conscious level his scent was very mild. I figured my sense of smell had imprinted on him at the impressionable age of 16. It’s a good thing he turned out to be a wonderful person, because I finally married him a few years ago.
