Night Sounds

                                                                                                             Night Sounds

                                                                                                              Night sounds
                                                                                                                     Fill the air.
                                                                                                                           Dogs and insects and cars
                                                                                                                                       Are there.
                                                                                                                Loud it is.
                                                                                                                        On and on.
                                                                                                                               Serenading us
                                                                                                                                         With their habitual song.
                                                                                                                  They invite us
                                                                                                                         To stop –
                                                                                                                               And to
                                                                                                                                       Listen on.

#Meditation of Sorts

Meditation of Sorts

People from various backgrounds and belief traditions have tried meditation of some kind.  So many of us battle with the tribulations and trivial distractions.  It varies from day to day.  But it is familiar.  This verse gives us an opportunity to have a laugh at these moments and begin again. Compare with Nearer.

Meditation of Sorts

(i)

Out of bed in a bleary stupor,

Worrying mind trying

To get a groggy body scurrying.

Into the shower,

Scrub-a-dub-dub.

On you go.

Button the shirt.

Bucket up that belt.

Where is that pen?

Sit down.

Water – check.

Phone off – check.

Meditation app – check.

Bong!

(ii)

The body stills,

And the mind starts.

Inner chitter-chatter

Of mind apes and monkeys,

Gibbons yabber to chimpanzees,

Gobbledee-gook and wobbledee-dee.

What worries you today?

What stresses come the morrow?

What regrets from yesterday

Still visit you with sorrow?

Whoa!

Breathe.

Listen.

Ah…

……………..

Bong!

Time’s up.

Gentle Rain Falls #postingforpeace

Gentle Rain Falls
Gentle rain falls

This evening.

Trickling off leaf ends, and

Running down drains

In a soft metallic meter.

A damp coldness sits

Upon the night air

Inviting

Stillness of soul.

You Know! So, Stop!

You Know! So, Stop!

You know the feeling when you go on and on

Galloping here and there and up and down

And around and about and in and out

And you just want to slow

In a more rhythmic flow

And stop and be still

Stop still.

Stop!

Cool Morning

Cool Morning

 Cool morning,

seedbed of the day,

coming through the shadows

of the ebbing night.

Falling on the follicles

of our skin

with a crisp embrace.

Quiet morning,

sounds are still,

birds have faces folded

in the feathers of their breast,

their song a sunrise away.

Still morning,

barely a stirring,

so little traffic around the streets,

shuffling footfalls of other walkers,

the occasional car whirring,

its lights a brief blink of light

in the deep, dark pre-dawn.

Gentle morning,

A moment of peace

Before the pace of life quickens.
